The re-roofing process of the Port Talbot town centre HQ for Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council carried more than the usual
challenges of our day-to-day work in the new build sector.
Not only was work required to progress above live and occupied offices, but full public access was to be maintained to the building.
Furthermore, whilst a strict completion date was to be adhered to, works were required to be halted in order to accommodate a full
complement of bookings in the adjoining Princess Margaret Theatre.
The 4,200m2 roof, comprising over 51,000 Ffestiniog Welsh slates and 12,000 Eternit Thrutone NT fibre cement slates, was renewed
in three separate phases under the cover of a large scaffold over-roof.
The over-roof enabled large scale removal of existing roof slates to permit the installation of additional insulation and the
renewal of felt, battens and slates, whilst protecting the occupants and offices beneath.
In order to ensure that programme date requirements were met, we were required to carry out our works from 5:00am to 14:00pm rather
than standard working hours. This helped to avoid significant disruption to key areas over the offices, as well as the Theatre.
The contract was completed on programme with a final account value of over £415,000.
